Winchester Model 1892 .44-40 Stembridge Silver Screen Saddle Ring Carbine with COA

This Winchester Model 1892 saddle ring carbine is a documented Hollywood-used example from Stembridge Gun Rentals, one of the best-known suppliers of arms and equipment to the motion-picture industry. Chambered in .44-40 Winchester Center Fire, the carbine carries Stembridge identification number S7042, which is stamped with an “S” on the underside of the receiver.

The accompanying certificate of authenticity, signed by Stembridge Gun Rentals president Sydney R. Stembridge, identifies this carbine by its studio inventory number. The certificate reports that it was used by numerous actors and stunt performers in productions ranging from Stagecoach through Rio Lobo, as well as television series including Bonanza and Maverick. The documentation does not identify a particular actor or individual scene, but it establishes the carbine as a long-serving studio piece with substantial Western-film provenance.

Configured with a 20-inch round barrel, full-length magazine tube, saddle ring, pinned blade front sight, and sporting rear sight, the carbine has the classic profile associated with Hollywood Westerns. The barrel, magazine tube, and barrel bands have been nickel plated. It wears a plain walnut carbine forend and a later replacement walnut buttstock fitted with a checkered plastic WRACO buttplate.

Condition is fair and reflects extensive studio service. Most of the reapplied nickel remains, with minor flaking and scattered surface wear. The receiver has a worn gray patina, and several markings are soft. The forend shows nicks, scuffs, and a split near the left side of the nose. The replacement stock displays numerous scratches, abrasions, and handling marks. The bore remains defined with black-powder-related abrasion, while the lever-action mechanism is functional but described as sticky.
